Six-spotted Tiger Beetle
Cicindela sexguttata / Coleoptera
It is always a treat to have one of these beautiful, metallic green beetles land in front of you on a hiking trail! They are one of the most interesting insects you might encounter in the woods. Often the adults will land in front of you on a trail and fly a few feet ahead when you get a little too close. It is almost like playing "leapfrog" with a beetle!

They are quite voracious predators in both the adult and the larval phases. The larvae live in holes in the ground from which they emerge to grab passing insect prey. Insects and kids are so hard to photograph, they are never still!
