Ospreys are sometimes called "fish hawks" because of their habit of hovering over a lake or river in search of fish. Like hawks, owls, eagles, and falcons, they are raptors or birds of prey. Ospreys can be easily identified by the sharp bend at the "elbow" in the wing. Other soaring birds have straight wings.
These birds are very protective of their nests and will make loud, short chirps when disturbed or threatened.
