I saw this female Monarch butterfly laying an egg on a milkweed leaf in my yard; it took only a couple of seconds, then she was fluttering off to another plant. The eggs are usually laid singly on the underside of the leaf to help protect them from predators. Butterflies taste through their feet. It is common to see them quickly touching leaves in search of host plants on which to lay their eggs.
