In May 2002 this beautiful area on Escambia Bay was set aside as a nature preserve. I was thrilled to learn that it will never be developed, many summers of my childhood were spent here on a houseboat. My father and I enjoyed seeing the area and remembering the great times our family spent here. This picture was taken in August 2003, I don't know how the area fared during the storm surge of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. I hope "Ivan the Terrible" left some beach! ***Update --- I visited this area in late December 2004, the sign is now gone, washed up somewhere in the woods. The trees held their ground, the beach still had lots of debris that had washed up and is now partially buried in sand. (photo by Ken Light) 1820

Blazing Star; Slender Gayfeather Liatris gracilis / Aster Family Milton, FL October 2004 This flower was photographed in Milton, FL the second week of October 2004 when we went to help my parents clean up the tree damage in their yard caused by Hurricane Ivan. They live in Santa Rosa County in an area that has not been greatly developed...yet. I love to take walks through the neighborhood in the mornings to look for wildflowers.

Rayless Sunflower Helianthus radula / Aster Family Milton, FL
I found this flower along the side of the road while I was walking with my husband in my parents' neighborhood in October. It is a very strange flower because it has no rayflowers (petals). Note the greenbriar tendril clasping the stem. Milton was once known as "Scratch Ankle" due to the large amount of scratchy briars that grew everywhere during the early days of the town! :) ***Update*** When we visited in Dec. 2005 we were heartbroken to see that the wooded area where this photo was taken is now being cleared and developed to build more houses. Development is rampant in many parts of Florida.

I "paid" for this photo with pain! As I was focusing the camera I felt a sharp pain on my toe and ankle, I glanced down and saw a couple of ants chomping down on my skin. Fire ants!!! I knew if I took photos in Florida long enough, it would finally happen! I was a lot more careful of where I stepped after that! The pain was worth it though, it had been years since I had seen this plant and I was delighted to find it again!

Being from Oak Ridge, I was happy to find this lovely Lupine growing on the side of a sandy road. According to one website, this plant is endangered. I knew I had seen a lupine blooming along this road years ago, so I wanted to see if it was still there. Gee, if I just could have remembered organic chemistry in college the way I can remember where I have seen wildflowers years ago! The seeds of lupines are poisonous to goats and cattle. The toxins contained in the seeds are lupinine, anagyrine, sparteine, and hydroxylupanine. The big names are almost bigger than the seeds themselves!

This is the plant I called "Quail Manure Weed" because it appeared when my parents got a load of quail manure for their garden several years ago! The tiny white flowers bloom below the leaflets and later become seed pods. It is a very invasive non-native plant that will spread all over the yard once established.

I always enjoy seeing these pretty red flowers blooming among the dunes on Santa Rosa Island, they look like little red herald trumpets. I photographed these at Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pensacola in August 2003. I hope the 20-foot storm surge of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 didn't wash away most of the dune plants! ***Update, Dec. 2004 --- After seeing the beach at Santa Rosa Island and a video about the hurricane damage near Pensacola, I now know that the area received even more serious damage than I ever dreamed! The storm surge flattened the dunes and cut through the island at Gulf Islands National Seashore. It will take many years for the area to recuperate.

Bachelor-button Polygala nana / Milkwort Family Munson, FL March 16, 2008 I found this plant growing in a pine forest on the Bear Lake trail at Krul Lake Recreation Area. The forest had been burned recently in a controlled burn. Strangely, fire is an important part of the pine forest ecosystem, it clears out much of the underbrush that would shade out and eventually kill many of the wildflowers. Note the 2 tiny red Sundew plants in this photo.

White Top Pitcher Plants Sarracenia leucophylla / Milton, FL July 2, 2005
These beautiful and interesting plants are considered threatened because of loss of habitat, too many wetlands are being drained. Because Pitcher Plants live in nitrogen-poor soil, they are carnivorous. They eat insects that are attracted to a sweet liquid at the base of the hollow leaves. Downward-growing hairs on the inside of the leaves prevent the insects from escaping, the exhausted insects fall into the liquid at the base of the leaf. Enzymes in the liquid digest the insects for nourishment. The flowers bloom in the spring, but the old heads remain on the plants late in the year.

People usually think of insects eating plants, these plants eat insects!!! Pitcher plants are carnivorous, they eat insects to suppliment their nitrogen requirement. The tall open leaves have small downward-growing hairs that impede the escape of insects unfortunate enough to crawl down into them to drink the liquid at the base of the leaf. Enzymes in the liquid digest the insects. The red spheres are the flowers.

This is another carnivorous plant that grows along wet ditches, bogs, and savannas in northern Florida. Since there were Pitcher Plants in the vicinity, I knew there would probably be these little plants too. I walked along the roadside next to a deep ditch until I spotted something red on the other side of the ditch. Ken and I last visited Krul Recreation Area in August 1995, the day before Hurricane Erin hit (it was supposed to keep going west and hit New Orleans, but it changed direction over night and hit Pensacola the next day). I had seen several Water Spider Orchids along the shoreline of Krul Lake, so I hoped to find the plants again. Unfortunately, the mowers had been there the day before and very little was spared. This pretty little flower grew low enough to the ground that it didn't get chopped off!

Krul Lake, in Blackwater River State Park, has clear water, very inviting for swimming. I'd want to keep an eye out for alligators though. One year some hunting dogs disappeared in this park, they were found a few days later when the owners tracked down their radio collars --- inside an alligator! Ken and I were a bit unnerved when we learned about the incident, we had waded across Sweetwater Creek a couple of days before because the bridge had been washed out! 797

Star Anise; Stinkbush Illicium floridanum Munson, FL March 16, 2008 I must finally be making an influence on my husband after 29 years of hiking together! He spotted this flower blooming in the woods while we walked on the boardwalk at Krul Lake Recreation Area. I was so proud of him! :) It was the first time I'd seen this flower, so that made it even more special! The plant is a small tree and it was growing away from the boardwalk, so I had to use my telephoto lens to take this photo. Maroon-colored flowers usually have a foul odor as a means of attracting flies or beetles as their pollinators, I didn't smell this one, but the name "Stinkbush" is a pretty good indicator that the flowers have a bad odor.

Harper's Beauty Harperocallis flava / Lily Family Endangered Species! Liberty Co., FL Hwy. 68 May 18, 2010 We stopped along the highway so I could get another shot of the Grass Pink Orchid. What a lucky break that was! I noticed a green state truck parked along the road and a lady with a GPS. I went to talk to her and she told me she was counting a very rare wildflower. I asked if she could tell me what it was (sometimes the flowers can't be revealed, which I can understand), she said it was called Harper's Beauty. She then took me across the highway and showed me a yellow flower. She explained that the plant grows ONLY in the Apalachicola National Forest. What a great opportunity it was to get to see this beautiful wildflower! I would have not been able to identify it if she had not told me what it was. I was glad I got to meet her. 374
