Germany 2017

We visited Germany for my niece's wedding in July 2017. Our trip included Munich, Oberammergau, Salzgitter Bad, and Hannover. We were thrilled to get to hike in the Alps at Oberammergau, where there were many wildflowers. I documented 180 different wildflowers on the trip, many were familiar roadside "weeds" that we see in the United States that were brought here by immigrants either by accident or on purpose. However, there were many new flowers that I had not seen before or ones I had seen in Norway or Alaska .
I had some small German wildflower books when I went there, I also bought a very good book that helped me identify nearly every different flower I saw!
English names or translations, when I know them, will be in parentheses. As you see the German names, see if you can figure out what they mean, some are humorous! German translations will be in quotations.

A few common German terms translated:
Echt(es) - true
Gewöhnlich(e),(es), (er) - common
Wiese(n) - meadow
Acker - field

After we checked into the bed and breakfast at Oberammergau I asked if there was a place with wildflowers that we could easily walk to from Oberammergau. We were told about the Weidmoos Preserve not far from where we were staying. It was a great area, I was excited to see so many different (and often new to me) wildflowers! There were small streams, beautiful grassy meadows, and lush forests. I was amazed at how many different kinds of orchids we saw! How wonderful this area had been preserved from development. All of the flowers listed July 13 were seen here!

Linderhof Overview

Linderhof was one of the homes of King Ludwig II, it is short bus ride southeast of Oberammergau. Construction on this small palace began in 1869. Photography is not allowed inside, so I can't show all the gold leaf, mirrors, tapestries, velvet, porcelain, and incredible furniture inside. King Ludwig II loved glitz and glamour and was enamored of the earlier French monarchy, much of the decor resembles the halls of Versailles. Tours of the palace are given in several different languages.

We had some time before our niece's afternoon wedding in Salzgitter Bad, so we decided to get in a quick hike. The people at our hotel suggested going to the Heerter See (Heerter Lake). Three is a 2-mile trail around the lake, which had been the site of an iron fabricating factory during World War II. The lake is well-known for a birding area during certain times of the year. An observation tower above the lake offers great views of the birds. This trail through the forest was quite buggy, the mosquitoes were awful!
