This insect made me do a double-take when I saw it land on my milkweed flowers. I thought it was a really strange-looking wasp until I noticed that it had only 2 wings (note the little yellow halteres). This fly looks so much like a wasp with its metallic, gunbarrel blue wings, black and yellow coloration, and even a "wasp waist". The long pointed object on the head is its proboscis. It drank nectar from the milkweed flowers.
