In the spring the reproductive termites will grow wings, fly from their nests and begin new colonies. This is one that I found at my school. Ants also will fly from their nests, the easiest way to tell an ant from a termite is to look for a thin "waist" between the thorax and abdomen, termites don't have a constricted waist.
