We put a white sheet with a black light bulb that shines all night on the porch at the cabin where we have the AMSE science camp. Many kinds of insects are attracted to the light. These 2 moths were a sample of some that were on the sheet one morning. Moths keep their wings open when they land, butterflies hold their wings up. Some moths have triangle-shaped wings like the darker one shown here, it has only the upper wings visible. The lighter colored one has all 4 wings visible.
Moths greatly outnumber butterflies by types and quantity, so they are more difficult to identify. I have tried to be as accurate as possible in identifying the moths in this gallery, but it is possible that I may have made some mistakes.
