Coleophora octagonella [T]
Hodges #1398
I found this Octagonal Casebearer Caterpillar on my car's windshield as I was driving from an outdoor class. I often see them hanging by a silken thread from tree limbs. The upper collar part of the case is very different than the lower cone-shaped part, it is made up of tiny white pellets. Thanks to Bob at Bugguide.net for his help in identifying this critter!
This little guy got to be on "Style", a women's show on Knoxville's WBIR-TV, the local NBC station. I did a talk on "UFO sightings in the woods" (UFO meaning "Unusual Forest Organisms"!) and I showed this larva as an example.
