I had seen this kind of butterfly at White Sands NM too. It was commonly seen in many of the desert areas on our trip. What a beauty this butterfly is! The following photo shows the underneath view of the wings. While reading about this butterfly, I learned the name "sister" comes from someone with an active imagination who thought the wing pattern looked like a nun's head wear. :)
