The historic Freels Cabin is the oldest structure left in Oak Ridge. The cabin was built in 1803 and is on the National Historic Registry. It was part of a farm and homestead in the Scarboro area which later became Oak Ridge. It is located in the Three Bends Area on Freels Bend and not open to the public. This is where the AMSE Summer Science Explorers Camp is held each year. I have been teaching my outdoor science classes here since 1987. When the government came in and took over the land from the people of the small communities of Wheat, Scarboro, Elza, Robertsville, Edgemoor, East Fork, and Bethel, most of the homes, schools, churches and stores were removed. The Oak Ridge Peace Bell is located in the park at the Oak Ridge Civic Center. It was designed by Oak Ridgers and forged in Japan. The bell commemorates the dates of Pearl Harbor attacks by Japan and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. The uranium for the atomic bombs was processed in Oak Ridge. The bell also celebrates the friendship between the people of America and Japan. It is especially beautiful in April when the cherry blossoms are in bloom! 1435

Many of the exhbits at the AMSE are about the history of the of Oak Ridge. The city was built in 1942 to produce the enriched uranium for the atomic bombs that were used in World War II. The project was a top secret undertaking, most of the 75,000 workers at the 3 plants had no idea what they were working on. The city was located behind guarded gates, each citizen had to have a badge to enter. Since there were many famous scientists here, the teachers' class rolls had just their students' first names to protect the childrens' identities. The city of Oak Ridge has the nicknames of the Secret City, the City Behind the Fence, and the Atomic City. Despite the name, the city is not the home of the singing group the Oak Ridge Boys! 1351

In the summer of 2008 the 3-year, multi-million dollar renovation of Oak Ridge High School was completed. The following photos were taken during the community open house Aug. 18, 2008. Education is very important in Oak Ridge. ORHS is consistently ranked among the top secondary schools in the nation. When the 50-year old school began showing its age, the community, the labs, and local businesses rallied behind the fund raising effort for a nearly complete overhaul of the building. Even though the school's colors are maroon and gray, ORHS is now "green". Every effort to utilize energy saving technology was used. 200 geothermal wells were dug in front of the school to be used in heating and cooling the school. Skylights and large windows provide much of the light for the classrooms and media center. 1316
