Coquinas are molluscs that live just along the waterline, they get exposed by waves and must quickly dig into the sand to avoid being eaten by shore birds and Ghost Crabs. The strong, muscular foot is visible in this photo. These little animals are very fast, it is not easy to photograph them before they disappear beneath the sand.
There is a type of rock called coquina that is made of compressed seashells. My guess is that it would eventually turn to limestone.
