This is the Icewater Spring that the shelter is named for. This pipe empties onto the Appalachian Trail just below the Icewater Springs shelter. Fortunately, it is on the other side of the mountain from the toilet! Despite how cold, clean and tempting the water in the Smokies may appear, don't drink directly from the streams or springs! All water in the park must be boiled, filtered, or chemically treated to kill bacteria, viruses, and parasites such as Giardia.
