Break a small piece of leaf, it smells like wintergreen when it is crushed. These plants are in the Heath family, they grow in the same habitat as Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron, and Trailing Arbutus. They have red berries in the late fall and winter. These flowers were blooming at Piney Falls State Natural Area in June.
