If the Bluebonnets are the #1 wildflower in Texas, the Paintbrush has to be a close #2! I had hoped to see the fields of these two wildflowers growing along the sides of the highway like I'd seen in field guides, magazines and on the internet, but I had to be happy with small clumps due to the drought. The red bracts are the showy part of Paintbrushes, the actual flower is the yellow part in between.
