There were lots of Wooly Bear Caterpillars (Pyrrharctia isabella) along the trail and on the roads. They always seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere! In October one of the towns in western NC has a Wooly Worm Festival to get the "winter forecast" from the black and brown critters. Wooly Bears become Isabella Tiger Moths after pupation.
