A "Fairy Ring" of mushrooms forms when the root-like mycelia grow out from a center point (perhaps an old tree stump). Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, they grow when the fungus has consumed enough nutrients to produce spores. Some fairy rings can grow to a diameter of many yards. This was not a full ring. I took this photograph at the visitors' center at Cumberland Gap National Park in Kentucky.
