Dixie Reindeer lichen - a fruticose lichen
Cladina subtenuis
Big South Fork

This type of lichen grows on the ground. It is soft and spongy when damp, it crumbles if stepped upon when dry. It is very common in limestone cedar glade areas in Tennessee.
Lichens are very sensitive to environmental changes because they aborb pollutants from the air. High concentrations of smog can kill lichens.
