Camouflage Looper (Wavy-lined Emerald Moth) Synchlora aerata / Geometrid (Inchworm) Moths Hodges #7058 At first glance, this Daisy looked like it had a brown, dead leaf in the middle of it. Camouflaged Looper Caterpillar Synchlora aerata Hodges #7058 I did a doubletake when I saw this strange Smartweed flowerstalk, it just didn't look right. Upon closer inspection I noticed the brown caterpillar that was covered with flowers it had bitten off and stuck on its back. Quite a sneaky little rascal! Some insects stick the dried up remains of their prey on their backs, like walking graveyards! Nature is so amazing sometimes! Flowers are a great place to look for insects and spiders. 1825

Tent caterpillars overwinter in a silvery-black egg mass on a wild cherry tree. In the early spring they hatch, crawl to a fork in the branches, and begin to spin a silken nest. They remain in the nest during the day and then crawl out to eat the leaves of the tree at night. Since wild cherry leaves contain cyanide it is likely that the caterpillars are poisonous if eaten by birds. By the way, the little black dots in the nest are not "caterpillar eggs" as some people think (caterpillars are the larval stage of moths and butterflies, they can't lay eggs). The dots are called "frass" (a.k.a. "poop"!). 2124

Io Moth caterpillar August 26, 2007 Rhea Co., TN This Day-glo green caterpillar was crawling along the trail at Piney Falls. It was only about 2" long, but it could defend itself quite well. The tiny black spines are just visible above the green tufts. For its size, this little critter can pack a painful punch with the venomous spines. It is hard to believe this caterpillar will turn into the Io moth. There are a lot more eyes on the lookout for critters, and the kids are a lot faster than I am to catch them! Blinded Sphinx Moth Paonias excaecata / Sphinx moths #7824 August 7, 2007 Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.) Being an elementary science teacher, I get some unusual and interesting "gifts"! A friend brought this moth to my classroom, she had found it on the side of a building, put it in an empty fast-food coffee cup and brought it to me. I took it home to photograph and try to identify it. I put it on a tree and it crawled to a piece of bark. It (actually I'm pretty sure it's a "she" due to the non-fuzzy antennae and the shape of the abdomen) has false eyespots on the lower wings. She kept them covered unless I touched her. I never could get her to "flash the eyes" so I could take a picture! I guess I harassed (gently of course!) her one too many times, she suddenly fluttered away to a near-by tree. 3319

Snowberry Clearwing Moth Hemaris diffinis / Sphinx Moths Hodges #7855 Oak Ridge, TN (Anderson Co.) August 2008 These moths look a lot like bumblebees, but they are harmless. They mimic the large black and yellow bees which protects them from hungry birds, this is called mimicry. These moths have very few scales on their wings which are easily dislodged. It is a misconception that moths and butterflies have to have scales on their wings to be able to fly. The problem with handling these insects is that the wings can be damaged if they are caught by hand. 2078

A Wooly Bear Caterpillar Pyrrharctia isabella
Hodges #8129 According to the adherents of mountain weather lore, the winter of 2004 should be a long, hard, cold one. The belief is that the brown bands on a Wooly Bear caterpillar indicate the number of weeks of cold weather the following winter will have. We are due a cold, snowy winter, we haven't had one in a few years! The better to go skiing! :) ***Update*** The winter of 2004-05 turned out to be a disappointment as far as snow is concerned, but the Wooly Bear was on target concerning the cold temperatures at both ends of the season!

Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar Hypercompe scribonia Hodges #8146 I got a kick out of watching this crazy caterpillar! It was writhing around on the ground, I thought maybe it was trying to loosen its skin so it could molt. I took it home in a jar, but it didn't molt overnight. I released it in my garden the next day. Later I read that these caterpillars do this when they are disturbed, I guess it didn't like the looks of me! :) 1919

Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar Hypercompe scribonia Hodges #8146 This is the same Crazy Caterpillar when it was curled up in a ball. The red stripes are a form of protective coloration if the stiff, black hairs don't deter a predator. It will turn into a white moth with black spots. Milkweed Tussock moth caterpillar side-view Euchaetes egle Hodges #8238 Oak Ridge, TN July 17, 2007 I was outside testing my new little point and shoot pocket camera, when I spotted this crazy-looking caterpillar crawling on a milkweed plant. I ran back inside to get my SLR so I could get a good close-up. It was 8:30 PM so I had to use my flash. This is just one of many insects that eat milkweed. The bright colors of this caterpillar probably indicate that it is either poisonous or very distasteful (or both). I would imagine the spines and the hairy tufts make it pretty unpalatable too. 1649

I found this mass of tiny caterpillars hatching on the back of a milkweed leaf while I was searching for Monarch caterpillars. I'm sure these are some type of moth caterpillars because of the protective white mass and the fact that butterflies usually lay single eggs or small clusters. I guess moths go by the "safety in numbers" approach. I'll have to watch the plants over the next couple of weeks and see what these little critters turn into. Most newly hatched caterpillars have a large black spot on their head as seen here. (See next photo to see what they turned into!) 3401

Regal Moth Caterpillar (a.k.a. "Hickory Horned Devil")

Regal Moth Caterpillar (a.k.a. "Hickory Horned Devil") Citheronia regalis #7706 This huge caterpillar is about 6" long. It was eating the leaves of a Sweet Gum tree. After eating its fill, it will pupate underground for 2 years before becoming a Regal Moth. The long orange horns are harmless, they are used to intimidate birds and other predators. 1726
