According to the adherents of mountain weather lore, the winter of 2004 should be a long, hard, cold one. The belief is that the brown bands on a Wooly Bear caterpillar indicate the number of weeks of cold weather the following winter will have. We are due a cold, snowy winter, we haven't had one in a few years! The better to go skiing! :)
***Update*** The winter of 2004-05 turned out to be a disappointment as far as snow is concerned, but the Wooly Bear was on target concerning the cold temperatures at both ends of the season!
