Roseate Spoonbill Ajaia ajaia Homosassa Springs, FL Dec. 14, 2009 These pretty pink birds are quite a treat to see. I photographed this one at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park. It was in an enclosure, so I was able to get quite close. I wasn't so lucky at Sanibel Island, where we saw them in the wild. The bright pink patch on the wing indicates this bird is an adult. Spoonbills use their unusual, flat bills to catch small crustaceans in the mud. 593

Osprey Pandion haliatus Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, FL Dec. 14, 2009 Unfortunately, most of the birds at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park were injured and unreleasable. The only good thing is they are well-cared for and it gives the general public a rare chance to observe them up close. The large, hooked beak is used for tearing the flesh from fish. The talons are used for capturing the fish. 318

Magnificent Frigatebird Fregata magnificens Sanibel Island, FL Dec. 15, 2009 This male and white-breasted juvenile were flying quite high, so this was the best photo I could get. The male's red pouch is just barely visible under his beak. During mating rituals, he will inflate the pouch to impress the females. These fish-eating birds have a very distinctive profile, so they are easy to identify even flying high in the sky. 455

Sora Rail non-breeding plumage Porzana carolina Fundy Bay, Santa Rosa Co., FL Aug. 31, 2007 This little black bird would not let me get too close, so I was not able to get a good shot. This is a common bird of freshwater marshes. I was a little leery of getting too close to the creek mouth, the last time we were there, we heard there was a large alligator living in that area! I was thrilled to get this shot of the Skimmer eating. The bird's lower beak is longer than the top beak, so it uses it to skim the surface of the water to catch fish. Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber* Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, FL Dec. 13, 2009 We heard these loud birds before we saw them! They were much larger than I expected and I didn't realize they were such a bright color of orange (not pink like their plastic counterparts and the Eurasian species!). They use their large curved beaks to sift shrimp and other small crustaceans from the mud and sand. 460

Great Egret Casmerodius albus Milton, FL March 19, 2008 I had seen this beautiful bird from the river bank at my uncle's vacation house. It was too far away to photograph, so my brother and I took off in a paddleboat and fought a strong wind in order to get close enough to take a picture. He was holding onto a small cypress tree in the middle of the river when I got this shot. I wish I could have been even closer, but it took off and flew away before I got a chance. This bird is in its breeding plumage, the long, wispy feathers are visible on its left side. These beautiful birds were nearly wiped out because of these feathers, ladies in the late 1800's wanted them for their fancy hats. What a waste! 486
33 Great Egrets were nearly wiped out for their beautiful, wispy plumes to be used to decorate women's hats in the late 1800's. The Audubon Society was formed to help protect these beautiful birds.

American Avocet (l) and Black-necked Stilt (r) Recurvirostra americana and Himantopus mexicanus Palo Alto, CA July 2, 2008 I photographed these two shore birds together to show the difference in their bills. Avocets have an upturned bill which they often sweep side to side in the water. Stilts use their straight bill for probing in the mud. Different bill structures and lengths help birds in the same habitat keep from competing so much for food. This photo was taken at low tide at the Palo Alto Baylands. 350

Snowy Egret Egretta thula Palo Alto, CA July 3, 2008 There was a small group of eucalyptus trees with a little rookery of Snowy Egrets nesting in them at the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. These beautiful birds were nearly wiped out in the late 1800's and early 1900's for their delicate plumage. The feathers were used in women's hats! What a tragic loss that would have been! These birds may be elegant, but they do not make good neighbors! They would squawk and peck at each other if one came too close to another's nest. They make the funniest sound I have ever heard from a bird, a chortling sound like a drunk duck! This guy (or gal, they look alike) has raised its feathers, perhaps to make it look more intimidating or to attract a mate. 584

This shot was taken over the mudflats at the Palo Alto Baylands as the Harrier hunted for birds below. A fellow I met who was watching the birds said, "If you see the shore birds fly away suddenly, look up, there is probably a hawk nearby!" This bird has a distinctive white band above the tail. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Tyrannus forficatus March 30, 2009 This bird is unmistakable with its long, split tail. I had a very hard time getting a photo, these birds wouldn't let me get too close. I must have looked pretty funny as I slowly stalked them often hiding behind utility poles! Flycatchers land on powerlines, tree limbs, and even barbed wire fences to watch for flying insects. The central Texas area is the only nesting area for these birds, they like the security of the juniper trees. 528

Vermilion Flycatcher - male Pyrocephalus rubinus Concan, TX (Garner SP) March 30, 2009 When I first saw one of these spectacular birds, I thought it was a Scarlet Tanager, a birder quickly set me straight! Poor Kenny, he really had to use every ounce of patience he had when I would yell, "Stop now, I see another one of those red birds!", he would pull over as quickly as he could safely. It was fun to watch these birds dart out from a tree limb or a fence to catch an insect in mid-air. I must have looked pretty funny stalking the different birds I saw on the trip. The only one I didn't get a photo of was the Caracara. One was in the median along the interstate and I had my macro lens on another time and couldn't get a shot of it! 483

Yellow-rumped Warbler - female (first winter coloration) Dendroica coronata Concan, TX (Garner SP) March 30, 2009 Warblers can be notoriously difficult to identify, but even I could tell which one this one was thanks to the yellow spot on her back! The woodpecker was waiting to fly to the hummingbird feeder to load up on nectar. It was really funny to see such a large bird drinking out of the feeder as it swung back and forth! Boat-tailed Grackle Quiscalus major Boerne, TX March 29, 2009 These large black birds were both obnoxious and comical, we couldn't help but be amused by them. They were the first bird we heard when we stepped outside the airport when we arrived in San Antonio. They make a variety of calls, often sounding somewhat like a car alarm! This guy was in the "mood for love" and was loudly announcing his desires to the females nearby by calling loudly and puffing up his feathers! If you live in an area where grackles live, it is best not to park your car under the trees where they roost at night, it won't look the same the next morning! 495

Loggerhead Shrike Lanius ludovicianus Bigfoot, TX April 1, 2009 As we were driving down the backroads of south-central Texas I watched the powerlines and fence rows for this gray and white bird with black markings. It was a bit hard while the car is moving at 50+ mph to tell the difference between a Mockingbird and this Shrike until we were right next to it. I tried to sneak up on this bird, but obviously, I didn't get close enough before it flew away. Shrikes are interesting birds because of the way they store their food, they impale grasshoppers and even mice on long thorns or barbed wire fences! 492

Blue Grouse Dendragapus obscurus Mount Rainier National Park June 22, 2009 As I was photographing wildflowers I heard an odd, low "whump, whump" sound coming from the woods. It finally dawned on me that it might be a male grouse calling for a female. I scanned the hill above the parking lot across the highway and finally spotted this gorgeous bird. He was "strutting his stuff" in hopes of attracting a mate. That was an exciting spectacle to witness! 634

Anna's Hummingbird Calypte anna Salinas, CA July 5, 2008 This is a young male who has not yet grown in all of the red feathers on his neck and head. I photographed this bird on a feeder in my uncle's backyard from a 6' ladder. It helped to be on the same level as the tiny birds. I found it difficult to photograph the red feathers, called a gorget, the birds had to be at just the right angle to reflect the red light, otherwise the feathers looked olive-colored. Hummingbirds have such short legs it is impossible for them to walk, they can only perch. 672

The hummingbirds became very active just before sunset, sometimes with up to 6 birds at the feeder at once. Hummingbirds are highly territorial, so they weren't real thrilled about having to share the feeder. They would dive at one another and make their little squeaky defense calls. The male on the left has much more red on his neck than the bird in the previous photo. Females have little or no red on their necks. 424

The rate of wingbeat is 45 beats per second, giving the birds their humming sound as they fly. Their diet consists of high calorie flower nectar (or sugar water from feeders) and small insects. The body length of these tiny birds is only 4" and they weigh in a less than an ounce! 408

Broad-tailed Hummingbird - female Selasphorus platycercus Las Cruces, NM Oct. 7, 2008 These little beauties were feeding at the nectar feeders at the Dripping Springs Natural Area visitor center on the western side of the Organ Mountains in Las Cruces, NM. Hummingbirds are quite feisty for their small size, it seems they spend more time and energy chasing other hummers away than they do eating! I used my 300mm telephoto lens and the camera's flash to get this photo. 779
