This is one of many Sealions that we saw on a dock below the Santa Cruz pier. While we were watching the sealions two teenage boys started to climb down the steps onto the dock to get closer to the sealions. When their parents didn't say anything, my "teacher instinct" kicked in! I said to them, "I don't think that's a good idea!" One of them asked, "Why, would they get mad"? I answered (a bit sarcastically), "Well yeah, this is their territory! They have teeth and they can bite!" Just because an animal is furry and cute, it doesn't mean it will be safe to approach them! This was a California version of a Dumb Tourist Trick! Sealions have been known to attack people when they have felt threatened.
