Even though Mt. Rainier is several miles away, the only highway around the park is still affected by the geology of the mountain. Rockslides and roadside collapses are common due to the unstable rock and ash that the highway is built on. This area of the highway was down to one lane for repairs because of a road collapse during the winter.
