This male House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) was photographed in the garden at my school. Like starlings, these birds are invasive European imports. My parents always called them "spatzies" when I was growing up. When a friend from Germany gave me a German bird book, I learned that this bird is called a "Haus Spatz", and I realized that is where "spatzie" came from. I don't like these birds, they've taken over our Bluebird houses.
