Picoides villosus

This female Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) was another winter visitor to my birdfeeder. These woodpeckers look a lot like Downies, but they are slightly larger. They are important insect eaters in the forest. Hairy woodpeckers are found in all parts of the U.S. except the southern part of Texas and southwest Arizona.
