This female Redbellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is waiting her turn to eat from the feeder outside my picture window. Males of this species have a fuller red patch on their head (see next photo). Note how her feet grasp onto the limb. Woodpeckers have 2 forward and 2 rear-facing toes; perching birds have 3 forward-facing toes and one rear-facing toe.
