This female Redbellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is enjoying a seed from the feeder outside my picture window. Males have a fuller red patch on their head. Note how the feet grasp onto the feeder. Woodpeckers have 2 forward and 2 rear-facing toes; perching birds have 3 forward-facing toes and one rear-facing toe.
