I photographed this Yellow Bellied Sapsucker Woodpecker drilling holes in a tree in our neighbors' yard behind our house. It was taken through the living room window with a spotting scope at a distance of about 40 yards, so it is not as sharp as I would have liked. However, it is possible to tell what the bird is doing! When the sap oozes from the holes it is drilling in the bark, the bird will come back and drink the sap.
