Concan, TX March 31, 2009 This photo was taken early in the morning. The woodpecker was waiting to fly to the hummingbird feeder to load up on nectar. It was really funny to see such a large bird drinking out of the feeder as it swung back and forth! I saw a pair of these birds at Garner State Park calling and doing a mating dance, but they were too high to get a good shot.
Concan, TX March 30, 2009 I spotted these woodpeckers in a large cypress tree along the Frio River. It appears they are both males since they have the red spot on top of their heads.
San Antonio, TX March 25, 2009 Try as I may, I could not get a better shot of these birds! We spotted them as we were eating lunch at an outdoor cafe on the Riverwalk. I'm sure I annoyed some of the other patrons as I kept jumping up with my camera to get a good angle. Some of them didn't quite understand my enthusiasm about a couple of birds! :) The male (right) kept flying off to collect small branches to help build a nest.
