Boerne, TX March 28,2009 Living in east Tennessee, we have just the Ruby-throated hummingbird, so it is always a treat to go out west where we can see other species. This little guy was photographed at the Cibolo Nature Center, where I could get relatively close. Hummingbirds can only perch, they have such short legs they are unable to walk. Note the yellow pollen on his beak!
The hummingbirds became very active just before sunset, sometimes with up to 6 birds at the feeder at once. Hummingbirds are highly territorial, so they weren't real thrilled about having to share the feeder. They would dive at one another and make their little squeaky defense calls. The male on the left has much more red on his neck than the bird in the previous photo. Females have little or no red on their necks.
Boerne, TX March 30, 2009 We got a kick out of watching these funny geese courting along Cibolo Creek in Boerne early one morning. These non-native geese are from Africa.
