These Brown Pelicans are in their breeding colors. Unfortunately, they may not have much luck this year with the impending oil spill looming in the Gulf of Mexico. We were at St. George Island, FL for our son's wedding in May 2010. His wife and I spotted these birds sitting on old pilings in Apalachicola Bay, so we stopped to get some photos.
Fundy Bay, Santa Rosa Co., FL Aug. 31, 2007 This little black bird would not let me get too close, so I was not able to get a good shot. This is a common bird of freshwater marshes. I was a little leery of getting too close to the creek mouth, the last time we were there, we heard there was a large alligator living in that area! Thanks to my friend Charlie for his help in identifying this bird.
Wakulla Springs State Park, FL Dec. 20, 2009 I was thrilled to finally see these birds close enough to get a good look at them! The males have a very bright red beak that looks as though it is made of plastic. Moorhens are plant eaters.
