Bigfoot, TX April 1, 2009 As we were driving down the backroads of south-central Texas I watched the powerlines and fence rows for this gray and white bird with black markings. It was a bit hard while the car is moving at 50 mph to tell the difference between a Mockingbird and this Shrike until we were right next to it. I tried to sneak up on this bird, but obviously, I didn't get close enough before it flew away. Shrikes are interesting birds because of the way they store their food, they impale grasshoppers and even mice on long thorns or barbed wire fences!
Concan, TX (Garner SP) March 30, 2009 This bird caught my attention because it was bobbing up and down on the rock in the middle of the Frio River in Garner State Park. I asked the park volunteer, who was also a birder for help on identifying this bird.
Boerne, TX March 28, 2009 This variety of titmouse is found in Mexico and central Texas.
