Nov. 30, 2007 This little gray Tufted Titmouse was just one of many that was waiting to snatch a seed from the feeder and then fly off to a distant branch to shell and eat it. It seems like they use a lot of energy to fly back and forth to eat their food! When I was a kid growing up in Nashville, we had a titmouse that came to our feeder for 2 years in a row that had just one leg. We never knew what awful trauma it suffered to lose a limb. It was amazing to watch that little guy handle the seeds.
Titmice (or is it "titmouses"?) coming and going! Sometimes I can't quite catch the birds sitting still! I wish the birds had been in focus better, it is interesting to see how they use the feathers on their wings and tail.
Oak Ridge, TN December 14, 2008 The short, sharp beak of the Chickadee is used for eating seeds and small insects. This one was waiting its turn on the rope that holds the bird feeder outside our window.
