Oak Ridge, TN March 17, 2009 I finally got a good photo of this bird! It landed on the tree behind my house. I changed lenses in record time to get this shot! He didn't stay there long, so I was delighted to catch him. :)
drilling holes in a tree in our neighbors' yard behind our house. It was taken through the living room window with a spotting scope at a distance of about 40 yards, so it is not as sharp as I would have liked. However, it is possible to tell what the bird is doing! When the sap oozes from the holes it is drilling in the bark, the bird will come back and drink the sap.
. The bird pecks holes in the bark to encourage sap to ooze, later it will return to drink the sap and eat any small insects caught in it. Now I just need to get a photo of the bird in action!
