) was photographed in the garden at my school. Like starlings, these birds are invasive European imports. My parents always called them "spatzies" when I was growing up. When a friend from Germany gave me a German bird book, I learned that this bird is called a "Haus Spatz", and I realized that is where "spatzie" came from. I don't like these birds, they've taken over our Bluebird houses.
Kingsport, TN March 2, 2008 This pretty little bird and its mate were seen by the bank of the Holston River in Kingsport on a warm March morning. Song Sparrows have a beautiful, lilting call that will cheer you up!
