It is very easy to tell the difference between the male and female house finch, he is much more brightly colored.
Great Smoky Mountains NP May 10, 2008 I had been looking for a Meadowlark to photograph for years. Sadly, these handsome birds are becoming scarce due to habitat destruction. This guy was singing loudly in a tree in Cades Cove in the Smokies. Meadowlarks are ground nesters. They eat insects, grain and seeds.
I photographed this pair of Goldfinches on the feeder at Frozen Head State Park in August. The duller colored female is the bird perched on the chain. In the winter the male birds will lose the bright yellow plumage and take on an olive hue.
