. The bird pecks holes in the bark to encourage sap to ooze, later it will return to drink the sap and eat any small insects caught in it. Now I just need to get a photo of the bird in action!
has much more red on his head than the female. He was seen on the tree behind our house. Note the position of the toes on his feet, two toes point forward, the other two point backwards.
I was thrilled to see this beautiful, huge woodpecker eating from the suet feeder in early March 2007. It is the largest of the woodpeckers in our area. It is not hard to see how this bird was the inspiration for the "Woody Woodpecker" cartoon series! These large woodpeckers often drum on wood siding on houses and on gutters, they are just marking their territory they are not eating the house!
