Birthwort Family Wild Ginger flowers are related to Little Brown Jugs. Both have flowers that grow on the ground. These are common in the Smokies. Perennial Where seen:Frozen Head SP, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warriors' Path SP
Purslane Family April 10, 2005 Carolina Spring Beauty flowers have pale pink nectar guides. The leaves are larger and rounder than those of the Virginia Spring Beauty. For this plant, I think of "C" being (nearly) round and "C" is for Carolina. Perennial Where seen:Norris Dam SP, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warriors' Path SP, Piney River SNA
The pistil and anthers of Virginia Spring Beauty mature at different times as can be seen in this photo. The anthers are ripe on the flower on the right, they are prostrate on the flower on the left and the pistil is mature.
