Calycanthus family The maroon flowers of this shrub have a "vinegary" odor, but the leaves have a pleasant, spicy smell. The name "Bubby Bush" comes from the practice of the mountain women putting crushed leaves in their dress tops to make themselves smell nice! ;) These are common in the Walker Valley (Tremont area) in the Smokies. Illiciaceae April 14, 2006 I found this shrub blooming at Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville. At first I thought it was a type of Sweetshrub.
Honeysuckle Family Height: 4" to 32" May 22, 2005 This plant was blooming in White Oak Sinks in the Smokies in late May. It will have berries later in the fall. Perennial Where seen: Great Smoky Mountains
