Snapdragon Family April 17, 2005 Cattle do NOT get lice from this plant as European farmers once thought! The flowers look like a pinwheel when viewed from above (as seen on the home page of this site). There are many of these flowers on the Panther Branch trail at Frozen Head. Perennial Where seen:Frozen Head SP, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Cherokee NF
Calycanthus family The maroon flowers of this shrub have a "vinegary" odor, but the leaves have a pleasant, spicy smell. The name "Bubby Bush" comes from the practice of the mountain women putting crushed leaves in their dress tops to make themselves smell nice! ;) These are common in the Walker Valley (Tremont area) in the Smokies. Perennial - Shrub Where seen:Great Smokies NP, University of Tennessee Arboretum, Ijams Nature Center
Illiciaceae April 14, 2006 I found this shrub blooming at Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville. At first I thought it was a type of Sweetshrub.
