- side view Many orchid flowers work as temporary insect traps. The insect has to go through a "floral maze" to get out of the flower taking the pollen along when it finally exits.
Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid - Front view
Orchid Family April 29, 2005 I always enjoy finding this lovely pink and white orchid growing along the trailsides. Many orchids must have a soil fungus that grows into their roots to help them grow. They will not survive if moved from where they grow naturally. Never dig or buy wild orchids! I photographed these on the Little River Trail in the Smokies in April. {Formerly known as Orchis spectabilis} Perennial Where seen:Oak Ridge Greenways Trails, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Frozen Head SP
