Heath Family May 14, 2005 These flowers were blooming in the Tremont area of the Smokies in mid-May. They produce berries, but they are not tasty like the closely related, juicy, sweet blueberries. The corolla of the bell-shaped flowers of Deerberry are more open than Blueberry or Farkelberry. Note the long pistil on each flower. You'll find these bushes growing in dry woods in acidic soil. Perennial - Shrub Where seen: Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warriors' Path SP, Oak Ridge
Since Mountain Myrtle grows above 4000 feet elevation in the Smokies, it is one of those flowers that you have to work for to see! map...
Heath Family Rare Height: 8" - 20" Height: to 1 foot May 29, 2006 I was happy to see the whole side of the mountain at Charlie's Bunion in bloom with these pretty white flowers. Other places to see them include Myrtle Point at Mount Leconte and along the Alum Cave Trail. It can grow in the cracks of the slate mountaintop. Perennial
