Sandalwood Family April 15, 2006 I was excited to find these small plants blooming at the Lilly Bluff Overlook at the Obed National Wild and Scenic River near Lancing, TN. I don't know how this plant got its' strange name! Height: 4"-16" Perennial Where seen: Obed Wild and Scenic River
Heath Family May 14, 2005 These flowers were blooming in the Tremont area of the Smokies in mid-May. They produce berries, but they are not tasty like the closely related, juicy, sweet blueberries. The corolla of the bell-shaped flowers of Deerberry are more open than Blueberry or Farkelberry. Note the long pistil on each flower. You'll find these bushes growing in dry woods in acidic soil. Perennial - Shrub Where seen: Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warriors' Path SP, Oak Ridge
