Milkweed Family Height: 8" - 20" This milkweed has groups of four leaves in a circle or whorls, thus the species name, "quadrifolia". The flowers are longer stemmed than the White Milkweed. The Chestnut Top Trail was where I found this plant blooming in late April. Perennial Where seen: Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warrior's Path SP
Mustard Family Aquatic Height: up to 6" April 24, 2005 If you find this plant growing in a clean stream, you could pick the leaves and mix them in a salad, they have a sharp peppery taste. Water cress is in the Mustard family. Perennial Where seen: Oak Ridge, University of Tennessee Arboretum, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Warriors' Path SP
Orchid Family April 29, 2005 I was really excited to find this all-white Showy Orchis while I was leading a hike for the Gatlinburg Wildflower Pilgrimage! I also found an all-pink variety. I was impressed with the die-hard enthusiasts who stuck it out and hiked with me in the rain! :) Perennial Where seen: Great Smoky Mountains
