Aster Family When trying to identify "DYCs" (D*#$!@d Yellow Composites) check not only the shape and arrangement of the leaves, but also the texture and sometimes even the smell. The more identifying factors, the better! Perennial Where seen: Great Smoky Mountains NP
Aster Family This plant is very common in the Smokies. I found these blooming at Tremont in early July. Perennial Where seen: Oak Ridge, University of Tennessee Arboretum, Great Smoky Mountains NP
Rose Family Agrimony has small yellow flowers that become little hooked seeds. I once had a long-haired student who got a head full of the sticky, brown seeds when she got tangled up with the plant in the fall. It took quite a while to get them out of her hair! This one was blooming on the shore of Melton Hill Lake in late July. Agrimony can bloom in the woods too. Perennial Where seen: Oak Ridge Greenways, University of Tennessee Arboretum, Great Smoky Mountains NP
