Pea Family Do not confuse the genus name "Lotus" with the aquatic lotus. This is a member of the Pea Family. These pretty little yellow flowers grow in a circle on the end of the stem. They are very bright and easily spotted along the roadsides. I found this plant growing along an exit ramp on I-75 at the Huntsville (TN) exit. I've seen this plant growing all over the country. Bird's Foot Lotus is poisonous to cattle and sheep if eaten, it contains the poison, cyanide. Perennial Where seen: Caryville, Great Smoky Mountains NP
