was an interesting hike to a fascinating oasis in the northern part of Joshua Tree National Park. It was hot and dry, it is important to take lots of water on a hike like this. I always feel like the moisture is being pulled from my body when I'm in the desert!

Multi-colored Lichen grows on many of the rocks in the park. Lichens help break down rocks by slowly releasing acids. Lichens are not plants, they are symbiotic organisms made up of fungi and algae. The fungal cells give the lichen its shape holds water; the algae give it color and produce sugars through photosynthesis.
