The light-colored rock in the lower mountains in the center of the photo is an alluvial fan. This formation is made up of rock that has eroded and washed down from the mountains. The Ocotillo thrives in the outwash of these fans.
I was surprised to see this Ocotillo stem with leaves, normally it is leafless in drought conditions.
