Arphia pseudontoniana Las Cruces, NM Oct. 4, 2008 We got quite a surprise when this grasshopper flew away, it had bright red flight wings which are probably a deterrent to predators. We saw this one on the Pine Tree Trail on the east side of the Organ Mountains. The following photo shows the grasshopper with open wings.

"Striped, slant-faced" Grasshopper Metaleptea spp. / Orthoptera Las Cruces, NM Oct. 4 2008 This funny grasshopper was seen along the Pine Tree Trail. Note how even the compound eyes are slanted on the head. I am unable to find a common name for this insect.
