This Beetle had such long antennae I could not get all of it in the photo! I snapped this shot on the Pine Tree Trail in the Organ Mountains. The beetle is on an Apache Plume flower.
My cousin Sam, his wife Sara, and 14 year-old daughter Shelly took us hiking on the Pine Tree Trail on the east side of the Organ Mountains. This is a 4-mile loop trail, but we didn't make it very far due to time constraints and too many plant and animal distractions, we hiked only about 1 mile in 2 hours!
Lily Family Las Cruces, NM Oct. 4, 2008 I stood next to this Sotol (pron. "so tall" and it is So Tall!) to give some prospective to its height. I'm holding a dead flower stalk. The flowers bloom in the spring. The leaves have sharp, serrated hooks on the edges that could do some serious damage to bare skin. I never did wear shorts while hiking out there! Photo by Sara W.
